Coleman was born in the town of Blackpool in Lancashire. She was the head girl in the Arnold School, Blackpool and received straight A's in her A-levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor following Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role alongside Matt Smith.
